Film Images
Whilst taking film images for my In The Style Of project, I took the opportunity to take a couple of film self portrait images. I used the same idea of having myself appear small in the images whilst staring off into a large world, but these images also lacked the reflection concept I wanted to work with. |
Self Portrait
For my self portrait shoot, I want to take reflection images in the style of Tom Hussey, but I want to focus on the concept of mental health and how it can distort reality. For this I have chosen a suitable and accessible location for this shoot, a lake surrounded by forest, with the lake providing the reflection aspect and the forest and plants providing the nature aspect I wanted in this shoot. I will take the images of myself in different positions and edit them in post to distort the reflection.
Shoot Prep
Equipment:
Camera
Tripod
Appropriate Clothing
Person to take the images once i've set up the camera
Health & Safety: Since i'm taking images near water, I'll need to keep the camera a minimum 1 metre safe distance away from water. I will also need to make sure there is rescue equipment nearby in case of drowning. Since the area is likely to be muddy, appropriate footwear must be worn.
When taking the image, I would also have to make sure the camera remained in the same place at the same angle so all of the pictures would line up perfectly. Since I would be in the image, I will have to set up the camera so the angle, focus and settings are correct, and then have someone else take the picture once I was in position.

Edited Images
For these images, I edited them via copying one image onto another, converting the background image into black & white and then erasing the parts of the top image I wanted B&W, which then brought the B&W background image through. Finally, I did any final touches to the images such as brightness and contrast adjustments. |
Crit Evaluation
I was not very happy with the images from this shoot, as I felt the monotone/colour combination did not look very good and had a fairly amateurish look to it and I plan on doing a reshoot once I have refined my idea. I was however happy with the idea of the changed reflection and think that it shows potential. I plan to look for an alternative for the colour/monotone idea for the reshoot.
Crit Update: During the Crit, the consensus was that the monotone/colour did have an amateur feel to it. However, I was given the useful suggestion by my course leader to change to muting the colours slightly, giving the same feel to the work whilst giving it a better, more attractive appearance to the work. I will definitely use this in the final reshoot for the work. They also said they thought the differing reflection idea had potential and should definitely be included in my final work.
