Starting Shoot
Shoot Plan:
Shoot Plan: For my first shoot, I plan to experiment with the UV paints and the blacklight to see what effects I can produce in comparison to the astronomical appearance I'm aiming to replicate. Since UV light is generally quite dark, I will need a high ISO (e.g. 800), a slower shutter speed (e.g. 1/100) and a low F.stop (e.g. 5.6). I will use the glass sphere to replicate a planet, with it being suspended part way down the glass vase. I will use the funnel to try to replicate the spiral of a galaxy.
Equipment: Canon 80D, 75-300 Zoom Lens, Blacklights, Water, Tripod, Funnel, Cuboid Vase, Glass Sphere, Waterproof Plastic Floor Covers, UV Neon Paint. Health and Safety: Use of water and paint in the studio requires waterproofing floors with protective covers. All water and paint must be kept away from electrical outlets at all times. All lighting must be safety secured. |

Shoot Evaluation:
Considering that this shoot was purely experimentation, I have managed to produce a successful series of images and moving image clips to creatively replicate the feel of sci-fi/ astro photography. They also reflect the neon/colour theme associated with the client's work. They also possess an intriguing juxtaposition of having the appearance of space (planets, stars, nebulae) whilst also looking similar to cellular images. However, one reoccurring issue I had with the moving image clips was that the blacklight caused a black motion effect across the screen, making it flash constantly. In my next shoot, I will lower the shutter speed of the moving image to prevent this. I also will acquire a larger tank to get wider shots for a more wide out spaced feel. Tutor Response: Dan is very impressed with the images produced from this test shoot. He believes they reflect the theme of the clients work and believes the moving image would incorporate very well into the clients own video work. He also agrees experimenting with a larger tank would be worth exploring. He also suggested experimenting with using glitter in order to further the appearance of stars, something I will try in my next shoot. Client Response: Nik is very intrigued by the project idea and looks forward to seeing the work it produces. |
