Shoot Plan
To begin this project, I have decided to focus on the macro portion of images, since the current COVID-19 pandemic prevents any travel that would be required for shoots of larger wildlife. Macro fauna is far more easily accessible, prevalent even throughout my garden, so shooting them requires zero travel and it will be easy to manage COVID-19 wise. The acquisition of a new Canon MP-E 65mm f/2.8 1-5x will also allow me to get much higher quality and closer images than in my previous wildlife projects, allowing for further development of my skills in this area. Equipment: Canon 5D MkIII, Canon MP-E 65mm f/2.8 1-5x Location(s): Garden Health and Safety: Any shots taken outside of the household property must involve COVID precautions (masks when needed, social distancing etc). Care taken around water (e.g. pond) since use of electrical equipment. Appropriate clothing and footwear worn. |

Shoot Evaluation
These shots have proven effective, with these final images having a personality to them rather than being simple scientific style images of wildlife. The use of the new camera lens has made shooting macro images far easier than before, with the new images produced being of much higher quality, detail and focus than previous shoots.
The timing of the project coinciding with the spring reemergence of wildlife has meant there is significant macro fauna around to shoot. Access to my garden, an area designed to attract macro fauna has also allowed for significant shooting. As with all outside shots, the images were natural light dependant, meaning constant compensation for light shifting was an issue. To compensate for this, and because I found some of the fauna to be surprisingly cooperative, I plan to try a "mini studio" using some flash lights I still have from a previous project. Crit Update: The response from the Crit was that these images have proven very successful, with my tutor/classmates especially praising the "personality" of the images, with the fauna possessing emotive expressions that help to attract attention to the images far more the simpler style macro fauna shots. |
