Makeup Through The Ages
Makeup in modern times is generally considered to be something mostly for women and to almost be a taboo for then not to wear it. That being said, makeup was originally worn often by both men and women as far back as the ancient Egyptians, and during the time of the ancient Romans, Greeks and even during medieval times. Despite this, it sometimes could be considered deceitful and frowned upon to wear excessive makeup as it was seen as trying to hide oneself. (BBC, 2016)
By the time of the 16th Century however, it became fashionable to wear excessive makeup, however makeup at the time was primarily lead based and ironically proved detrimental to peoples health. This almost completely contrasts than the modern use of make-up which is generally to hide imperfections and accentuate certain features to appear more attractive to others. While it may have smoothed a woman’s complexion day-to-day, over time it caused skin discolouring, hair loss, and rotted teeth. (Little, 2016)
