Project Crit
Macro Shoot Crit
The response to the macro images from the crit was that there were a number of successful images but that the shoot lacked any coherent style or theme, with the composition and angle of the images varying too much for them to be used together. However, Kirste mentioned that 2 images (shown below) had a strong portraiture quality to them (with it almost giving the insects a personality in the images) and that refocusing the project onto macro portraiture of insects would be the best way to continue. This has helped me realise that I tend to focus so much on getting the macro images perfectly in focus (something especially hard when it comes to macro photography), I often pay little attention to the actual posing and angle of the picture. This is something I will take into account for future shoots. I also plan on focusing the macro section of this project into the "macro portraiture" idea and plan to take specifically portrait style images of the images and in doing so, further refining the idea. Kirste also agreed that the fake studio technique produced poor quality images with grey edges to them, so any further studio style macro images I do will be through the use of black/dark backgrounds over the use of coloured card.
Location Crit
The response to the animal location shoot was essentially the same as the macro shoot, that the images lacked a specific portraiture quality and that the idea needed to be refined in order to get a successful and coherent series of images from this project. Moving forward from this, I plan to refocus the use of the portrait idea from the macro shoots to further develop the project. I also want to focus more on getting the studio appearance to the images I looked at produced by Tim Flach. Ideally, I would ideally get the animals into a studio setting to take pictures of them, however this is both impractical and unachievable in the time frame I have for this project. In light of this, I plan to take the pictures in a studio like manner by taking the images when the animal stands in front of a darker background, producing a studio style images (rather than the studio technique). I also plan on experimenting with the images to further give them the appearance of a studio like image through editing.

Location Reshoot Crit
In preparation for a planned location reshoot, I asked Kirste to do a brief crit of a previous shoot I had done to give me tips and advice for the new shoot. The main issues with the images were the lighting was generally off colour and not coming from the right direction, causing shadows across the animals' face. The other main issue was the composition of the images, they were not well thought out and had the appearance of "holiday snaps" rather than professional shots. I will use this advice to alter how I plan to take these new shots and as a result produce higher quality, more professional shots. Specifically, ensuring a correct white balance to correct colouring and paying much more attention to the lighting and composition of the pictures, using Flach and Angels' images as "guidelines".
