Making Planetary Surfaces
In preparation for this shoot, I have produced several planetary surfaces to be used in these shoots. Using a variety of materials, I have produced various different biomes in the shoot, including moonlike, volcanic, snowy etc. My aim is to have a mixture of textures and colours to create the widest possible range of sci-fi style images. In creating water like effects on the surfaces, I have mixed resin with the uv paint, so hopefully they should glow brightly when exposed to the blacklight in the same way the paint/water mixture does. |

Shoot Plan
Having now produced a number of test shoots, I have decided create my own planetary surfaces, varying in materials, colours and appearances, in order to get a range of effects. I have also purchased additional polished sphere stones to give myself a wide range of planetary appearances. The paint and water technique is the same as NEO10Y project, using the UV paint combined with water in a tank to create a neon scifi style appearance. I will also take some images of the new planetary spheres in the water without the surfaces, to get to grips with using them using the same technique as the NEO10Y project.
Equipment: Canon 80D, 75-300 Zoom Lens, Blacklights, Water, Tripod, Funnel, Perspex Cube, Glass Sphere & other Glass/Rock Spheres, Waterproof Plastic Floor Covers, Glow in the Dark Paint, UV Neon Paint, , Black Card, Planet Surfaces. Health and Safety: Use of water and paint in the studio requires waterproofing floors with protective covers. All water and paint must be kept away from electrical outlets at all times. All lighting must be safety secured. Paints to be kept out of the way of the shoot with lids on whenever not in use. |

Shoot Evaluation
This shoot has been very successful, with a wide variety of images produced, each possessing strong focus and depth of field. They also have the strong neon style scifi appearance I was endeavoring to create, with the polished stone spheres providing a realistic shape and texture of a planetary body. However I still had to produce the misty horizon effect (used to create an illusion of scale in the images) in post, something I will try to produce physically in future shoots, possibly through the use of a smoke machine. Also, both me and my tutor agree that some of the images loose their sense of scale when too much is added to the foreground (e.g. the alien trees - poppy plants). In future shoots I will ensure I use flatter surfaces I have made and not go overboard when adding any details to them so not to distract too much attention from the background planet paint/water. I also would like to experiment with adding stars in the images in some fashion, something I would like to attempt in future shoots.
