Working With Flash Workshop
For this flash workshop, we were shown two different methods, that would assist our night project, to use flash. The first of which was using flash when taking a picture to simulate evening or nighttime lighting during the day (as seen in the right picture). This is achieved by having the camera set up to take a very dark picture but using the flash to illuminate the image subject. This causes the background to appear very dark but the person to be lit normally, giving the appearance of darkness associated with evening and night. The second method we were shown was using flash when taking an image in darkness to create multiple "ghost" versions of the same person (as seen in the image below). This is achieved by having a long shutter speed and setting off the flash to illuminate the person. Then the person moves to another position and the flash is set off again. This is repeated as many times as needed to get multiple ghost in the image, producing an image that would otherwise need to be produced in Photoshop. Both of these techniques will be useful in The Night project and I hope to use at least one of them. |
White Balance Work
For this workshop, we were shown how a camera could be used to correct white balance manually by changing the colour temperature of the image using the Kelvin scale. For this the camera had to be set in the manual white balance "Kelvin" mode. This allowed the white balance of the camera to be adjusted manually, making easier to produce an image that wasn't strong in a particular colour, something that would come in useful in virtually all areas of photography.
