Idea Concept/Inspiration
The song I have chosen to base my project around is Caribbean Blue by Enya. I decided to use this song because it is very meaningful to me and coincidentally had been stuck in my head for over a week at the time of the pitch. However, the coincidental timing did give me a specific project idea. Seeing Andy Earls previous work and projects, specifically where he used shutter speed experimentation to create a painting like effect, inspired me to work using this song as this (and many) Enya songs use a "moving painting" concept in their music videos. From this I have decided to use Andy Earls technique to produce a painting style album cover with the need for excessive editing. This will also work well for Caribbean Blue as the song (in both melody and lyrics) possesses a strong surreal and dream like feel. |

A great deal of Enya's music utilises the moving painting concept to produce a surreal dream like feel that couples well with Enya's spiritual, almost dream like music. Alongside this, Enya generally appears (especially in Caribbean Blue) as an almost mystical woman in a dress. From this, I intend to produce a slightly surreal dream like feel in the production of my album cover. To do this, I will utilise the same technique used by Andy Earl, a slightly slower shutter speed coupled with a flash, creating a painting style image. I also plan to have a model in a dress moving in the image, incorporating Enya's mystical female figure appearance into the work. |
In regards to the location and setting, Enya's music possesses a strong connection to nature, with much of her music being about nature or using nature for symbolism (Caribbean Blue - Sky, Orinoco Flow - River, Echoes in Rain - Rain & Night etc), with her music becoming famous for its association with Nature and folk legends. I will use this information to plan a natural location with a fairytale like appearance to produce the surreal feel in the images. |
With this in mind, I have chosen to do this shoot at Amberely Wildbrooks, an area I have worked at in the past. I know multiple locations here that have an untouched, fairytale feel to them (an area of woods coated in moss, a mossy cove inside a sandy cliff etc). It also is an open area with good lighting and little public flowthrough to get in the way of the shoot.
