Project Proposal Form
Tim Flach
Tim Flach is an award winning photographer famous for his work involving animals in a studio setting. His works "Endangered" & "More Than Human" are especially the projects I want to focus on. For "More Than Human" and some of "Endangered", he brought animals into a studio environment and took portrait style images of them "posing". I'm using these shoot as inspiration for the animal section of this project. I will also be looking at the location images from his "Endangered" as inspiration for the animal section of the project. For these images, he would have complete control over the lighting thanks to the studio environment, something I will have to take more into account when taking any planned location shoots since I will be unable to bring animals into studio environment for this project. He would also need a high F.Stop to keep all of the animal in focus and sharp, something I will need to remember for my shoots. |
Both projects also included some macro images of insects, also taken in a studio setting. Whilst he has access to much closer and sharper macro settings, I still am looking at these images for inspiration for the macro section of my project. I will also have to take into account the changeability of natural lighting (rather than studio lighting) when taking my pictures, but I will need to take inspiration from Flach's work in terms of the composition and content of the images I will produce, specifically the potraitesque style images and the simple, undistracting backgrounds, usually of a complimenting or contrasting colour. |
Heather Angel
Heather Angel is a photographer who specialises in photography of animals and plants. She has won multiple awards for her work and has produced multiple portrait style images of animals (the puffin image shown to the left being one of her most famous). I am using her work as inspiration for my animal shoots, focusing on how she takes her images so successfully. Her style of photography has a strong point of focus on the images strongest point (e.g. the eyes on the monkey below, the beak on the puffin to the right). They also involve portrait style shots of the images subject either looking at the camera or "posing" for the camera in some manner (such as the penguin image in the bottom left). The images also have fairly bland or undistracting backgrounds, presumably so as not to draw focus away from the images subject whilst also having colours or textures that tend to contrast or compliment the colour of the images subject. Whilst most of my images will rely on a black background for a studio style images, this will be useful for any of my location shoots. |
Stephen Dalton
Stephen Dalton is a photographer who focuses predominantly on taking images of creatures whilst in flight. I will be focusing on his "Invertebrates" collection which features macro style images of multiple insects and other bugs, most of whom are in flight. I will be using this as inspiration for my macro shoots. However, he does has access to modified high shutter speed equipment allowing him to get much higher shutter speeds than I can with my available equipment, so I will be focusing more on his composition, focus and colour styles in his work.
Much like Angel and Flach, Dalton's images have a strong point of focus on the image subject whilst also having the complimenting/contrasting coloured backgrounds. He also takes the majority of his images in a studio, meaning he has complete control over the lighting. This is something I unfortunately will not have and I will need to pay close attention to the natural lighting I will be using during my shoots.
